I’m going to share with you some general tips that will help you get started learning to read tarot. . .

Before buying books or courses to learn tarot, you'll need to find the right tarot card deck. There are so many decks on the market – many for just their artwork. Beautiful pictures don't ensure that a deck is the best for you. Take the time to do an online search of the various decks to see which one(s) resonate with you. Once you have you're deck take a week or two to learn the name of each tarot card along with its picture.

Then look around for a good tarot book or course to learn the basic meaning of each tarot card, as well as a basic tarot spread. A good resource for beginners needs to be clear with only one meaning for each tarot card. Take another week or two to learn the basics. Then …

Begin reading tarot for your friends. Don’t worry about not having all the basics memorized yet. You learn best by doing. The following is a useful format to guide you’re tarot readings.

Start the reading by giving your impressions of the tarot card. Try not to focus too much on the definition of the tarot card. Use the picture on the tarot card and the subject of the card. Whatever your first impressions are, they are correct. Then determine the meaning of the tarot card as part of its position.

Do not ask your client for validation at this point; just share your first impressions. Do not try to second guess yourself. You’re learning how to tap into your intuition, not your intellect.

Once you have given your interpretation of the tarot cards, ask your client if anything you said has any significance in their life. If so, give a more detailed interpretation of the cards focusing in on this area. Try to link the cards together in a story as you do so.

If nothing you said rings true for them, then ask more questions and give suggestions. While watching the psychic, John Edwards, I've seen many people get “amnesia” during the session. It may take the client a while to make the connection between your reading and their life.

Some  things to remember:

  • If a card dropped during the shuffle, use it as a guide to comment on the tarot reading as a whole.
  • If a tarot card is reversed, explain the direction: vertical, this means X; but when reversed it indicates Y.
  • If you can not get a good reading on a specific card, ask the subject to draw another card and use it as a modifier and read it in conjunction with the original card.
  • If one of the cards indicates a negative event, explain that the client is the master of their own destiny and if they make changes in their life, they can remedy the situation and avoid trouble. Remind the client that the tarot cards only reflect the situation at the time of the tarot reading, and they have free will to change the outcome of future events.
